The Department for Education is to recruit hundreds of mathematicians to deliver free online tutoring to school students.
Issuing the call, the Department said experienced secondary mathematics teachers would be required to contribute to an expansion of its Learning+ Pilot Program, launched earlier this year.
It said that from next year, Learning+ would expand to include Years 7 and 9 after the Program was launched for students in Years 6 and 8 this year, thereby increasing the number of tutors needed.
Minister for Education, John Gardner said the Learning+ Program was targeted at developing understanding, confidence, and learning outcomes in maths in a one-to-one environment and was already producing positive results.
He said tutoring sessions would take place after school or on weekends for 30 minutes twice a week for 10 weeks.
Mr Gardner said schools could nominate to take part in the Program and students would be selected to participate.
He said all maths teachers including public, private, temporary relief teachers (TRTs) and teachers on maternity leave could apply to become to a Learning+ tutor.
“It’s a great opportunity for teachers to earn more income while helping students who need support,” he said.
“We’ve had an incredible amount of positive feedback from families and tutors involved in the Program this year.
“Mathematics is a critical skill for students to develop and schools are seeing many students improve their understanding in the subject because of this innovative online Program,” the Minister said.
Applications for tutoring in Term 1 of 2022 are now open online via the Learning+ tutor application portal at this PS News link.
