Education program to spark Safety Heroes

Energex and Ergon Energy say their Safety Heroes Program is now open to primary schools across the State.

Acting Executive General Manager Customer for Energex and Ergon Energy, Cloe Kernick said the aim was to try and break a participation record for the electrical safety education program.

“The registration record is 1,417 primary schools, which is an incredible 97 per cent, but we want to hit the magic 100 per cent this year,” Ms Kernick said.

“Since 2015 we’ve been sharing life-saving information on how to spot electrical hazards in the home and in the community and how to behave safely around electricity.”

She said every year there were examples of children passing the life lessons on to younger siblings, parents and grandparents “so the flow-on benefits are enormous”.

Ms Kernick said Queensland primary schools that signed up for the Safety Heroes Program would receive a free resource and prize pack to engage students in Electricity Safety Week from 6 to 10 September.

“The teaching resources are designed for a variety of ages and abilities, aligned with the P-6 Australian Curriculum for Health and Physical Education,” she said.

“They include a social stories booklet for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, a simple circuit demonstration kit, stickers and posters.

“We’re surrounded by electrical equipment from the day we’re born, so we need to understand as early as possible how to recognise the dangers and stay safe.”

Schools have until 20 August to register via email [email protected] or phone (07) 3910 1052.
