The Karratha Education Initiative— a partnership between the Woodside-operated North West Shelf Project and Karratha Senior High School — has been recognised for its contribution to education in the Pilbara.
The program was launched in 2007 to help improve educational opportunities for students in the region.
It recently had success at the 2023 Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association Excellence Awards, taking out the Community Development Excellence Award and the Chair’s Award which goes to the most outstanding program across all award categories.
Principal of Karratha Senior High School, Mario Tufilli said the program had been celebrated for its leadership, collaboration, innovation, and outcomes.
“It is great that the contribution from staff and students at Karratha Senior High School over the years was acknowledged at such a prestigious event,” Mr Tufilli said.
“The diversity of opportunities provided through the Karratha Education Initiative allows students to engage in programs and activities that support their health and wellbeing, strengthen academic achievement, deliver positive educational outcomes, and enrich students’ learning experiences.”
He said one of the key aspects of the Initiative was its comprehensive career awareness program.
“By exposing students to various career paths, industry insights and hands-on experiences, the program aims to equip them with the knowledge and skills required to make informed decisions about their future,” Mr Tufilli said.
“The positive impact of the Initiative is evident, with families remaining in Karratha, assured that their children have access to high-quality secondary education options and strong employment opportunities.”
