East of the Mountains is a performance jewel of unassuming persuasiveness. It’s not monotonous or over-sentimental, which it could have been had Tom Skerritt (Picket Fences, Alien, Top Gun) not executed his role with class.
The 88-year-old’s subtle, poised portrayal mesmerises, matching his character’s easy- going pace. Age shows, but he is in no hurry. Still lean and supporting a thick mane of grey hair, Skerritt’s rugged, deeply-lined face typifies cragginess.
When retired heart surgeon Ben Givens (Skerritt) learns that he has terminal cancer, he takes his beloved cocker spaniel, Rex, back to his boyhood home in eastern Washington, determined to end his life on his own terms. However, when Ben’s journey takes an unexpected turn, he is forced to use his steadfastness, distinctive fortitude and wittiness to overcome each new adversity.
As his plans go askew, first, his car breaks down and he feels compelled to accept a ride from a friendly young couple. However, they are baffled when he insists that they drop him off in the middle of nowhere. Then, while relaxing by a campfire, Rex is savagely attacked by a dog owned by a coyote hunter (John Paulsen).
The inflection in Skerritt’s voice – when speaking to vet Anita Romero (Annie Gonzalez) – is particularly noticeable. This heartfelt drama is most certainly one of the best by this veteran actor.
Skillfully directed by Chiro (The Hypocrisy of Disco: A Memoir), it features Academy Award-winner Mira Sorvino (Mighty Aphrodite, Norma Jean & Marilyn) in the role as Ben’s daughter, Renee.
The screen adaptation is based on the acclaimed novel by David Guterson, who is also the best-selling author of Snow Falling On Cedars.
