E-waste management

The Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change has announced funding aimed at improving e-waste management across the State.

Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said up to $2 million in grants was now available to local councils and industry for use on e-waste infrastructure.

“This new round of funding will focus on building e-waste reprocessing capability and capacity, while continuing to ensure the collection of e-waste is conducted to the highest standard,” Ms D’Ambrosio said.

“E-waste is defined as any item with a plug, battery or cord that is no longer working or wanted,” she said.

“E-waste is the fastest-growing type of waste worldwide with most electronic devices such as phones, computers, TVs and whitegoods ending up in landfill.”

Ms D’Ambrosio said the ban of e-waste to landfill, which was introduced in July last year, had paved the way for electronic items to be safely disposed of and reduced the harm these items had on the environment and human health.

“We’re supporting local councils and industry to keep potentially toxic e-waste out of landfill,” she said.

“This funding will allow e-waste to be reprocessed locally into valuable products.”

She said there were more than 1,000 locations across the state that accepted a range of e-waste items.
