The Minister for Justice, Consumer Affairs and Road Safety, Shane Rattenbury has announced that electric scooters and e-mobility devices are to become legal to ride in the ACT from this Friday (20 December).
Mr Rattenbury said e-mobility devices would give ACT residents new and convenient options for travel.
“They let people leave the car at home, and are easily combined with public transport,” Mr Rattenbury said.
“With the ACT achieving 100 per cent renewable electricity they can be recharged using clean energy and free of greenhouse gas emissions.”
Mr Rattenbury said the scooters and devices would be legal to use on shared paths and footpaths but would not be permitted on roads or on-road bicycle lanes except on residential streets where there was no footpath.
He said they would be subject to a maximum speed of 15 km/h on footpaths and up to 25 km/h in all other permitted locations.
He said riders will be required to wear an approved bicycle helmet, give way to pedestrians, keep to the left and slow down to 10 km/h when using a pedestrian crossing.
“These are convenient and fun new devices, but I remind people to be responsible for their and others’ safety,” Mr Rattenbury said.
“People should take care and learn to use the devices carefully before using them,” he said.
