The Digital Transformation Agency (DTA) has announced that applications are now open for its three-month Data Fellowships.

The Agency said that those selected for the Fellowships would be high-performing people who step outside their day jobs and create prototypes that improve or completely redesign approaches to real-life problems.

It said only employees of Australian Government Agencies can apply.

“They should be interested in building data skills within their Agency and be happy to share their knowledge and expertise with colleagues,” the DTA said.

“Former participants in our Data Fellowship Program have carried out a variety of data-related projects using a range of techniques.”

It said some of these projects included machine learning to detect offensive material during forensic investigations to protect staff wellbeing, empirical modelling to identify and target biosecurity risks at Australian airports, and longitudinal network analysis to see the effect of policy on how Government buys products and services.

The DTA said the Fellowships would be decided by a selection committee made up of people from the DTA and Data61 as well as the Chair of the Data Champions Network.

“The DTA and Data61 will talk with successful candidates’ Agencies to decide a start date for each placement,” the Agency said.

“The placement will run for about three months.”

Applications close on 3 August and more information, including application details can be accessed on the DTA website at this PS News link.
