The Digital Transformation Agency (DTA) has announced that it is developing an initiative to make it simpler and safer to securely access Government services online.
In a statement, the DTA said it was working with several Government Agencies on a ‘Digital Identity’ — a digital version of the 100-point identity check often carried out at a Post Office or bank branch.
“Once you have your Digital Identity, you can reuse it over and over,” the Agency said.
“This means you avoid the hassle of producing important documents each time you access a Government service to prove who you are,” it said.
“Digital Identity gives you faster and more convenient access to Government services from wherever you choose to use it, with the added assurance your personal information will be safeguarded.”
DTA said that most importantly, users could be sure the organisations that helped prove their identity online had been accredited by the Australian Government.
“The Digital Identity system is protected by strict security protocols set by the Australian Government and all information is encrypted and stored in Australia,” it said.
“Digital Identity is gradually becoming available to more people and businesses for a larger range of services. As part of the Digital Business Package, the Government will expand Digital Identity to help businesses recover from the economic impacts of COVID-19.”
DTA said many people and businesses had already created a Digital Identity through the myGovID, which gave them access to around 70 different Government services.
