Drivers urged to drive to survive

The Transport Canberra and City Services Directorate is urging Canberrans to make the pledge to ‘drive so others survive’ during National Road Safety Week this week (16-23 May).

The Directorate said making the pledge meant obeying the speed limit; wearing a seatbelt, not driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs; and not being distracted while driving.

“If we can do all those things, then we will be closer to achieving Vision Zero,” the Directorate said.

“Driver distraction is a serious road safety issue,” it said.

“Any activity that distracts a driver can result in higher speeds, lane deviations and delays in reaction time.”

The Directorate said that across the ACT and Australia, the country’s favourite buildings, bridges and icons would be lit up yellow every night this week in remembrance of the 1,200 lives lost, and more than 39,000 people seriously injured on Australian roads each year.

It said National Road Safety Week started as an annual event nine years ago, to remember and honour those who’d lost their lives on the country’s roads and encourage the community to pledge to drive safely.
