Access Canberra is to trial a new system for driver licence renewals in which it reminds licence holders that their renewal is not far away.
Minister for Business and Better Regulation, Tara Cheyne encouraged Canberrans with a driver’s licence to register, confirm or update their mobile number so they could receive the SMS reminders.
“We know life is busy and sometimes things get overlooked,” Ms Cheyne said.
“Reminders will be sent two days before driver licence renewals are due to provide drivers with a timely reminder to avoid expiry,” she said.
“This SMS trial is part of our work to continue to improve the way we deliver services to all Canberrans and to make life easier.”
Ms Cheyne said data indicated that a number of driver licence renewals and payments were made after expiry.
The Minister said the Access Canberra SMS reminders should help more than 16,000 drivers whose licences were due to expire during the trial period.
“This three-month trial will provide us an opportunity to test our systems before we look to see how it might be rolled out across a range of other transactions and registrations, including reminders for car registration renewals,” Ms Cheyne said.
