Drivers get lessons on back to school rules

With children now back at school after the winter break, ACT Policing has reminded the community that speed limits and other safety measures are back in place.

Officer in Charge of Traffic Operations, Station Sergeant David Wills said 40 km/h speed limits were back in effect in school zones between 8 am and 4 pm, and police would be enforcing them.

“Motorists will face tough penalties if they choose to ignore school zone speed limits,” Station Sergeant Wills said.

He said these speed limits are in place for a reason — to protect children around schools.

“If you’re driving near a school, please stick to the sign-posted speed limit and be extra alert as young children are some of our most vulnerable road users,” Station Sergeant Wills said.

He said police were also encouraging parents, guardians and teachers to ensure children understood how to keep themselves safe, particularly when walking to and from school, and to educate them about stranger danger.

“The Constable Kenny Koala program produces materials which can help reinforce safety themes taught at childcare and primary school, at home,” Station Sergeant Wills said.

“Parents, guardians and teachers are reminded to report any suspicious persons or activity to ACT Policing Operations immediately following an incident on 131 444.”

In an emergency, call Triple Zero (000).
