The Rottnest Island Authority has announced that a draft management plan for the island covering the years 2023 to 2028 has been released for public comment.
The Rottnest Island Management Plan (RIMP) sets out the Authority’s priorities for the island’s natural and cultural resources, facilities and visitor experience during the next five years. It also provides the framework for decision-making and planning for the island’s future.
In a statement, the Authority said the draft RIMP had five strategic focuses.
These were: Diversify the visitor base and enhance visitor experience; Deliver sustainable island infrastructure and services; Respect and engage the island’s cultural heritage; Explore and conserve the island’s environment; and Foster strong partnerships.
“The focus areas are supported by key initiatives designed to promote new opportunities on the island, while retaining its unique natural attributes,” the Authority said.
“The draft RIMP 2023-28 includes the draft Rottnest Island Land Use Plan. This defines the proposed land uses within the settlement and importantly classifies the remaining 85 per cent of the island as a reserve for the purpose of conservation and recreation.”
It said the RIMP contained significant commitments to sustainability, including delivery of 75 per cent of future power requirements from renewable sources.
“The draft plan forecasts ferry arrivals will increase to 770,000 visitors by July 2027, with day visitors accounting for 70 per cent of arrivals,” the Authority said.
The consultation process will run for eight weeks, closing on 9 May.
