The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) is to highlight sustainability and biosecurity at the Perth Garden and Outdoor Living Festival next week.

Development Officer at the Department, Laura Fagan (pictured) said the aim would be to show visitors how simple changes to everyday actions could help to create a more sustainable environment.

“A ramble through our Sustainability Precinct is a must at the festival,” Ms Fagan said.

“The Precinct will take visitors on a journey from the backyard to the beach and to their favourite camping ground to learn how they can live more sustainably and protect the environment from damaging pests.”

She said the display would be a place to test visitors’ knowledge about sustainability, while they would also be provided with resources and tools along the way, learning biosecurity lessons that could be applied to their property and beyond.

“Representatives from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions and DPIRD’s expert staff will deliver talks at the main tent daily,” Ms Fagan said.

“Sustainability is at the core of the Department’s work with primary industries across the State in assisting the sector to grow and flourish.”

She said the display would highlight how everyone had a role to play in supporting sustainability and how biosecurity worked hand-in-hand to protect the environment and primary industries from local and global challenges.

“One of the easiest steps people can take is to become biosecurity aware by learning about plant pests, weeds and diseases and how to control common garden pests and report any unusual observations,” Ms Fagan said.

The Perth Garden and Outdoor Living Festival is to run from 29 April to 2 May.
