The Community Services Directorate has launched its 2020 Back to School Appeal to raise funds for 1,000 ‘back to school’ packs for ACT children in need.
Minister for Community Services and Facilities, Suzanne Orr and Minister for Education and Early Childhood Development, Yvette Berry announced the appeal, inviting the community to donate generously.
“Following the success of the inaugural Back to School Appeal in 2019, the ACT Government is again partnering with ACT community organisations and online charity GIVIT for the 2020 Appeal,” Ms Orr said.
“The start of a new school year is a time of excitement for Canberra families but for some, this time of year comes with increased financial stress.”
She said the packs could include items such as water bottles, lunchboxes, shoes, socks, singlets and haircut vouchers.
She urged the community to get behind the appeal and help kids in need get the best start to the 2020 school year.
Ms Berry said that having a good start to school was fundamental to educational outcomes for young people.
“Having an equitable start goes beyond the necessary tools for learning — it’s having a new backpack and starting the term with a fresh haircut,” Ms Berry said.
“These additional things can have a tremendous impact on a student’s confidence going into the school year,” she said.
Details on how to make a donation or drop off items for the packs are available from the Givit website at this PS News link.
