The Departments of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) and Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) have worked with detectives from Fremantle to locate protected and illegal animals at a home in Hammond Park.
Officers from the three Agencies executed a search warrant under the Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007 at the property.
During the search they located and seized two Red-Eared Slider Turtles (one pictured) which are native to the southern United States and Mexico. They are classed as an invasive species and are illegal to keep as pets in Australia.
The red-eared slider turtle is considered an environmental pest outside its natural range because the species competes with native turtles for food, nesting areas and basking sites.
They are also recognised reservoirs for the Salmonella bacterium with infection of humans caused by the handling of turtles leading to restrictions on their sale in the United States.
Also seized were a Stumpy Tailed Barking Gecko and two young kangaroos.
All the animals are reported to be in good health.
In a statement, the DPIRD said a 20-year-old man from Hammond Park had been charged with the possession of illegal fauna under Section 152 of the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016.
A $2,500 infringement notice had been issued by the DBCA.
The DPIRD is continuing enquiries in relation to a charge of dealing with a declared pest under Section 23 of the Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007.
