Canberrans are being invited to ‘dive beneath the surface’ of the city’s urban art scene at the inaugural Surface festival next weekend.
Launching the festival program, City Services said that, next weekend (4-6 March), 35 local and interstate artists would work across 30 walls and structures to enliven the streets and laneways of Braddon, Civic and the National Triangle.
The Directorate said the works would feature street art, graffiti, portraits, stencils, Indigenous art, geometric and abstract art.
“The Surface festival program also features a rich events calendar for people to take part in tours, workshops, exhibitions, performances, panel talks and art installations,” it said.
“Surface is designed to experience at your own pace.
“We encourage visitors to move between areas by walking, cycling and using public transport where possible.”
City Services said the festival would channel contemporary placemaking, urban cultural renewal and community connection.
“It explores and broadens existing notions of artmaking and asks us to think about art and its role as a cultural compass, both on and off the street,” it said.
The Directorate said highlights of the festival program included the Scoot and Screen tour in the CBD each night of the festival; a masterclass on aerosol skills with graffiti artist DELM 413; the Urban Art Exhibition at Gorman Arts Centre; and Boogie Down Under at the Project Beats, an all ages block party on Saturday afternoon.
