The ACT Office for Disability has launched a radio and online awareness campaign promoting the services of its Official Visitors who protect the rights and dignity of people living in the Territory’s disability accommodation.
Acting Minister for Disability, Meegan Fitzharris said Canberrans living in disability accommodation and relying on services for day-to-day support, and people with disability living in aged care, were eligible for visits from the Official Visitor Program.
“The Official Visitor scheme provides an opportunity for people with disability, their families and carers, to raise concerns about the services they receive,” Ms Fitzharris said.
“The Official Visitors consider complaints, visit and talk privately with people about the supports they are receiving, as well as keeping an eye out for any systematic issues that might arise.”
She said the Official Visitors reported directly to the Minister for Disability and worked closely with the Public Trustee and Guardian and the Human Rights Commission.
“The Official Visitors for Disability, Ms Narelle Hargreaves and Ms Mary Durkin, play a vital role in monitoring and investigating the welfare of individuals with disability,” the Acting Minister said.
She said anyone who wanted to arrange a visit should phone 1800 150 035 or visit the Public Trustee and Guardian’s website.
