The Public Sector Commission (PSC) has announced the first Departments to be reviewed as part of a trial of the State’s new Agency Capability Review Program.

The participants are the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions; the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, and the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety.

The PSC said the reviews would begin over November and December with the aim of being completed by mid-2022.

In a statement, the Commission said the program had been developed to trial proactive, consistent, regular and comprehensive ‘health checks’ of the overall capability of the public sector.

“Each review will enable Department leaders to make evidence-based decisions on where to focus their efforts to improve performance,” the PSC said.

“It also enables information about what is working well in one Department to be shared across the sector. All of this will help deliver better Government services for Western Australians.”

The Commission said the chosen Departments varied in size, operating context, functions, metropolitan and regional presence, as well as the Government priorities for which they were responsible.

“This was a deliberate decision to deliver a robust test of the review process and framework,” it said.

“The remaining five Departments for the two-year trial will be announced in the first half of next year.”

It said each review would be undertaken by an independent lead reviewer, with staff at all levels able to contribute and provide input.
