The Department of Communities has been awarded Disability Confident Recruiter (DCR) status by the Australian Network on Disability.
It is just the second public sector Agency in Western Australia to have achieved this recognition.
The DCR status acknowledges the changes the Department has made to ensure that recruitment processes and practices are inclusive for people with disability.
In a statement, the Department said having access to appropriate adjustments when applying for positions enabled people with disability to fully participate in recruitment, selection and appointment activities.
“This creates a more inclusive and equitable process,” the Department said.
“For example, an adjustment may be offering flexible and alternative options to a traditional panel interview.”
It said enabling skilled jobseekers with disability to compete for positions on a level playing field increased the talent pool and benefitted everyone.
“The goal is to provide an equitable experience for all applicants,” it said.
“The attraction, retention and development of people with disability is a priority area for Communities.”
In December 2019, the State Government announced an action plan to make the WA public sector a leader in the employment of people with disability, with a target of five per cent workforce representation by the end of 2025.
“By achieving the DCR, Communities has made an important step towards reaching that target,” the Department said.
