The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety’s Title Compliance Branch has taken on the function of investigating unauthorised mining activity.
This duty was previously the responsibility of the Investigation Services team.
The Principal Investigations Officers will now boost compliance and enforcement against unauthorised mining.
In a statement, the Department said the decision to embed the role within the branch responsible for administering post-grant compliance activities across mining and petroleum tenure was made for two main reasons.
“Firstly it is to enhance the Department’s Integrated Compliance Plan for the Resource and Environmental Regulation Group,” the Department said.
“It also provides industry with a single point of contact for all title compliance and enforcement matters for the Group.”
The Department said that Matt Peckitt and Peter Omodei had joined the branch as Principal Investigations Officers.
“They will work closely with regional-based Mining Liaison Officers, Environmental Officers across minerals and petroleum matters, and other Government Agencies to increase on-the-ground presence,” the Department said.
“Both officers bring with them a wealth of investigations experience, having worked in the field for more than 50 years combined.”
The two officers can be contacted by calling the Title Compliance Branch on 9222 0985 or by email at [email protected].
