The Department of Defence has signed a new contract to offer “needs based” support services to help Australian Defence Force members transition from full-time service to civilian life.
Minister for Veterans and Defence Personnel, Darren Chester said the new contract with Right Management Consultants Pty Ltd was an important step for Defence.
“Historically, the ADF’s eligibility criteria has favoured access to services and funding based on a member’s length of service above other considerations,” Mr Chester said.
“The new needs-based approach will ensure the services are delivered in a focused and timely way with a view to building an enduring capability to sustain their civilian careers post-transition.”
Mr Chester said the new support program would include career coaching, job search preparation workshops, resume preparation advice and interview skills training.
He said the new services would complement the existing support programs delivered by Defence, including the 30 ADF Member and Family Transition Seminars held annually and the ADF transition coaching service.
“Defence recognises transition preparation should commence early and be maintained throughout a member’s ADF career. This approach will improve the current support to ensure members are better prepared to manage their transition to civilian life, whenever that may be,” Mr Chester said.
“The decision to use a national provider will ensure members receive a consistent, high-quality service, irrespective of their location. It will also be a less disruptive experience for members when they move to a new location as part of their transition.”
