Anzac week in the national capital is a masterful display of pomp and ceremony for the one day of the year when remembering the horror of the conflicts we commemorate should remind us all that the militarisation currently underway for our defence forces is a force to be reckoned with.
To this end Richard Marles, Shadow Minister for Defence, outlined the opposition’s Defence Policy in a pre-Anzac Day address at the National Press Club.
Among some of the more youthful attendees were ADFA students, probably most relieved to be having a sit down lunch rather than pounding the pavement in practice for the following day’s commemorations.
In the city to mark their support for the White Ribbon Foundation, hairdressers Franco of Canberra opened their doors on a Sunday for staff to volunteer to pamper customers with special treatments supplied by Kerastase and plenty of indulgence in champagne and fruit platters.
What a nice way to spend a Sunday with everyone making a donation to the cause instead of payment and plenty of discussion about how we can make a difference, support the White Ribbon initiatives and encourage communication among those who need help.
Many women who are victims of domestic violence find a sympathetic ear with their local hairdresser as a first line of seeking help.
This initiative seeks to encourage that and especially share White Ribbon’s programs among those who need it most.
