DAWR milks public for export opinions

The Department of Agriculture and Water Resources (DAWR) has invited community comment on proposed new laws for milk, eggs and fish exports.

Deputy Secretary at DAWR, Malcolm Thompson said the improvements embodied in Export Control Rules 2020would make it easier for Government, producers and exporters to respond and adapt to changing market conditions.

“The goal is simple,” Mr Thompson said, “To support industry with more contemporary, responsive and efficient legislation.”

“Duplication and ambiguity have been removed and the requirements to export are easier to understand, administer and use.”

He said a streamlined framework would make it easier for industry bodies to advocate, educate and disseminate export requirements.

“The legislation will continue to safeguard Australia’s reputation as a reliable, high-quality source of exports for our trading partners and the same level of regulatory oversight will apply,” Mr Thompson said.

“This will ensure our trading partners and consumers continue to have confidence in the quality and safety of Australia’s product.”

He said DAWR would work closely with stakeholders to provide as smooth a transition to the improved legislation as possible.

“Seeking stakeholder comments on the draft rules is a key first step in this process,” he said.

“I urge exporters, farmers and other primary producers to have their say.”
