The Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (DAWE) has developed a consultation draft for Australia’s first ever national biosecurity strategy.

The Department’s National Biosecurity Strategy Consultation Draft is now open for public feedback and comment until 18 March.

Minister for Agriculture and Northern Australia, David Littleproud said the Strategy would ensure Australia’s national biosecurity system was fit to face future challenges.

“Managing national biosecurity is becoming increasingly complex, with multiple and growing threats on a range of fronts,” Mr Littleproud said.

“Now, more than ever, it is important to look at how our biosecurity system needs to evolve to prepare for new and increasing future risks,” he said.

Mr Littleproud said the Consultation Draft identified the priorities for action to ensure a more connected, resilient and shared biosecurity system.

“It is designed to strengthen how we all work together and build on opportunities to improve our system,” he said.

“The Government has committed a record $500 million towards strengthening biosecurity since the 2021-22 Budget.

“This year we expect to expend more than $1.1 billion on our biosecurity and export programs.”

The Minister said the proposed Strategy was about getting Australia’s biosecurity setting right for the future, with States stepping up to their responsibilities.

“We have heard from industry, environment, community and Government stakeholders,” he said.

“Now I encourage every Australian to take this opportunity to have their say.

“It is a fundamental way that we can protect our way of life into the future,” Mr Littleproud said.

DAWE’s 39-page Consultation Draft can be accessed at this PS News link where informat is given on having a say.
