Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries, Mark Furner has thanked a team of Public Servants who recently volunteered to upgrade the outdoor area of the Save the Children’s Domestic and Family Violence Refuge in South-west Queensland.

He said Departmental of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) staff had laid 15 tonnes of pebbles, shovelled 5.5 tonnes of sand, planted 30 trees and shrubs, installed 50 metres of irrigation and constructed a sandpit.

“The women, children and staff at the refuge were very grateful upon seeing the completed sandpit and gardens,” Mr Furner said.

“Save the Children has also expressed its appreciation for helping make its grounds welcoming and homely for the women and children residing at the refuge.”

Meanwhile, Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, Di Farmer has announced the next phase of the Government’s domestic and family violence reform agenda.

The Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Council will serve a 12-month term, led by co-Chairs – outgoing Domestic and Family Violence Implementation Council Chair, Kay McGrath and former Queensland Police Commissioner, Bob Atkinson.

The council will be further supported by a newly-created Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Champions Group, to be launched next year.

Ms Farmer said the council would oversee the recently released third action plan of the 10-year Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Strategy 2016-2026.

“It will build momentum to increase corporate and community-led activity,” Ms Farmer said.

“Our best chance of ending domestic and family violence is to present a united front — that’s Government, business, community organisations, our health and education sectors all working toward the same vision.”
