The Department of Home Affairs has launched its 2020 security strategy to keep Australian families and businesses secure online.

The Department’s Australia’s Cyber Security Strategy 2020 outlines steps the Government, individuals and businesses of all sizes can take to protect themselves and the community.

Welcoming the Strategy, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said it represented the largest ever Australian Government financial commitment to cyber security and built on the strong foundations established by its predecessor the 2016 Cyber Security Strategy.

“The 2020 Strategy means that cyber security is a fundamental part of everyday life, so Australians can reap the benefits of the internet and the digital economy safely, and with confidence,” Mr Morrison said.

“We want to enlist all Australians in the fight to create a more cyber safe Australia – you are our secret weapon in our cyber security strategy,” he said.

“And we want to give you the tools to protect your family and your business.”

Mr Morrison said the Government intended introducing legislation to bolster the powers of the Australian Federal Police and Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission to identify individuals and their networks engaging in serious criminal activity on the dark web.

“Powers that allow offensive disruption capabilities will allow law enforcement to take the fight to the digital frontdoor of those using anonymising technology for evil purposes,” he said.

The Department of Home Affairs said the Strategy would be delivered through action by the Government to strengthen the protection of Australians, businesses and critical infrastructure from sophisticated threats; action by businesses to secure their products and services and protect their customers from known cyber vulnerabilities; and action by the community to practice secure online behaviours.

The Australian Cyber Security Centre also welcomed the Strategy encouraging all Australians to read it and play their part in creating a more secure online world.
