Curtain rises on performing art funding

The Department of Communications and the Arts has launched a national consultation program on a proposed framework for public support of the nation’s Major Performing Arts sector (MPA).

In a statement, the Department said Arts and Cultural Ministers had asked it to identify ways in which the MPA framework could be strengthened.

“Anyone in the arts sector and those with an interest in Australian arts and culture are encouraged to have their say,” the Department said.

“The major performing arts sector supported under the MPA framework comprises 28 leading companies in dance, theatre, circus, opera and orchestral and chamber music.”

It noted that MPA companies employed approximately 10,500 people and reached about four million people through performances, school activities and workshops each year, forming an integral part of Australia’s arts and culture.

It said that next year would mark two decades since the 1999 Major Performing Arts Inquiry was established, which outlined criteria for how MPA companies should be funded.

“At the meeting of Cultural Ministers in September 2017, Arts and Cultural Ministers from all jurisdictions tasked officials to identify opportunities to strengthen the MPA framework,” the Department said.

“The MPA Framework has provided the MPA companies with certainty and stability in funding, which has enabled them to play an integral role in the development of the performing arts in Australia, both as major employers of artists, creatives and arts workers and as leading presenters of high-quality work to audiences across Australia.”

It said however that since the MPA framework’s inception the Australian arts and culture landscape had undergone significant change.

“Technology is advancing at an unprecedented rate and Australian artists have become increasingly global in their focus, reach and activities,” it said

Submissions can be made via an online survey by 9 August and the survey can be accessed on the Department’s website at this PS News link.
