Creek’s name to be washed away

The Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy has begun the process of changing the 156-year-old racially derogatory name of a creek that connects four suburbs in Rockhampton.

Executive Director, Central Region at the Department, Darren Moor said public consultation had opened on a proposal to have Black Gin Creek renamed Dundula Creek.

“The change request comes directly from the Darumbal people who have Native Title in the area, and wish to see it renamed to Dundula, meaning gum tree, to reflect the character of the river,” Mr Moor said.

“The Department recognises that the continued use of the current creek name is derogatory to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and others in the community, and is pleased to be supporting the Darumbal people through the name change process.”

He said the creek extended for 22 kilometres, starting at the border of South Yaamba, running straight through Alton Downs to Dalma and Nine Mile.

Darumbal Elder, Aunty Sally Vea Vea (pictured left) said the name change suggestion came from the heart of Darumbal women.

“While we can’t rewrite history or right the wrongs of 150 years ago, we have applied to the Government to rename Black Gin Creek at Alton Downs, thereby stopping this particular name being memorialised,” Aunty Sally said.

“The current name is a constant reminder of a dark history associated with this creek, which is very hurtful to us Darumbal women.”

She said Dundula means gum tree and there were large gum trees along the creek that attracted native bees and birdlife which helped to bring the creek to life.

A beautiful creek should have a name which reflects its surrounds,” Aunty Sally said.

Public consultation on the Department’s job number 19-017 is open until 14 August and comments can be made at this PS News link.
