The Office of the ACT Inspector of Correctional Services has released the report of a review into the Services’ Court Transport Unit (CTU) which found issues relating to the safety of both staff and detainees.

The Inspector, Neil McAllister said his report, ACT Corrective Services Court Transport Unit 2020, found the while the CTU was highly regarded by the key stakeholders it serviced and the new court cells complex was a significant improvement, it wasn’t perfect.

“There are some issues that need to be addressed to improve the safety of both staff and detainees,” Mr McAllister said.

“We spoke with many CTU officers and heard their major concerns about managing children and young people in their custody, particularly given their lack of training,” he said.

“This issue must be addressed.”

Mr McAllister said his Office heard many complimentary remarks about the professionalism and conduct of CTU officers, particularly in challenging circumstances.

“CTU officers also need more training specific to their job before they commence work and there are some mandatory training courses that have not been completed by current CTU officers,” he said.

Minister for Corrections, Mick Gentleman said he had instructed the Justice and Community Safety Directorate to develop a plan of action urgently to explore and address the findings of the Report.

“This report makes it clear there is more to do to ensure Corrective Services staff have access to up-to-date and clear policies, adequate training, and can go to work in a safe environment,” Mr Gentleman said.

“The findings related to staff training, the safety of Court Transport Unit vehicles and outdated policies require particular attention,” he said.
