For those accustomed to an itinerant life, frequent travel necessitates excellent hotels. It’s a prerequisite for sustained performance: a core requirement, non-negotiable. Upscale indulgence for affordable luxury was our priority. For a stress-free stay, it’s essential you select Australian boutique experiences featuring cosy comfort and attentive staff.
We opted for smart splurging: stylish opulence, prime location, close to amenities, with some added extras. The luxury waterfront accommodation was ideal for a getaway in Tasmania’s Tamar Valley.
Bringing history alive on the banks of the idyllic Tamar River is the unique, characterful Peppers Silo Hotel in Launceston. Dating back to the 1960s, the heritage nine-storey building is built from historic 35-metre-high grain silos, converted to offer sophisticated rooms and suites, blending industrial heritage with modern luxury for a distinctive stay. A novel place to stay!
Past preserved is future built, which has certainly been the case with the Peppers Silo Launceston. The past has been revived — and imparts a high-end aura. An architectural triumph has taken shape and the transformation of this part of the riverfront, occupying prime land on the King Street Wharf, overlooking the conjunction of the North Esk and Tamar rivers, is extraordinary!
What’s truly amazing is the site was where the Kings Wharf grain silos were originally erected and left disused for decades. That was until 2016, when careful construction breathed new life into the structure, transforming the silo barrels into a state-of-the-art contemporary new hotel in 2018.
Being escorted to the seventh floor, Jonas enlightened us about the Gorge River deluxe room. In the south tower, it is one of the original cylindrical concrete silos. This is where you see the semi-circular original large rustic slabs of concrete tastefully blend into the contemporary design of the building.

Treat: A two-night minimum stay, with a la carte breakfast, could see you escape to the refined world of Eos by SkyCity, Adelaide. This offer ends on 15 January, 2026. Photo: Supplied.
The steel artwork in the rooms (depicting old photos of the silos and the hotel’s new plans) is cut from the structure’s original steel features. Panoramic views of the river and Cataract Gorge are amazing. Stringybark and ironbark recycled from old woolsheds that once stood nearby have been used to create furniture and woodwork around the hotel. Interior design is stylish: a classy colour scheme that enhances the cosiness of the grey cement of the original silos.
Redeveloped, the site has come ”alive” because it’s full of character and has re-created a lot of its old- world charm. A standout feature at reception, Archie was a friendly canine ambassador, a gentle black Labrador. He was met with an enthusiastic response, especially from children who were excited to see him.
Overlooking nearby Seaport, Royal Park, the Tamar River Basin, Cataract Gorge and Riverbend Park, we were centrally placed to walk to the CBD, with public transport a mere five-minute stroll across the footbridge. As Australia’s third-oldest city (after Sydney and Hobart), the land is a venerable expanse, imbued with history.
Crowds filled every corner. Walk through the picturesque City Park and you’ll see a wealth of attractions. In the city, the vintage allure of the architecture was stunning. We feasted on regional harvest at the Grain of the Silos Restaurant. Culinary offerings were dynamically redesigned to offer delicious, nutritious and hearty meals. It delivered on its promise of paddock to plate!
