The Maryborough Correctional Centre has recently gained two General Purpose dogs, Justice (pictured) and Yager, and their handlers, after they graduated from the Queensland Corrective Services (QCS) Academy.
Chief Superintendent and General Manager of Maryborough Correctional Centre, Kris Winter welcomed the recruits, saying they would provide a boost to security and officer safety at the Centre.
“Safety is our absolute priority, and the dogs and their handlers play a vital role in ensuring the safety and security of our Centre, and protecting our officers,” Chief Superintendent Winter said.
“The training the dogs received will ensure they are ready to take on the challenges of working in a dynamic correctional environment every day, providing an emergency response to support our officers in potentially dangerous situations.”
The Chief Superintendent said the high standard the handlers had achieved was a testament to their efforts and commitment, and the training the dogs received included obedience, agility, offender apprehension, tracking, intruder detection, property searches and operational deployment strategies.
Chief Superintendent Winter said Maryborough Correctional Centre had recently begun a recruitment campaign to fill 50 permanent positions.
“We are looking for good communicators who want an excellent work-life balance which they can enjoy on the Wide Bay area.
“We have had a great response so far but we are still looking for potential Custodial Correctional Officers to join our ranks,” Chief Superintendent Winter said.
