Corrective Services NSW (CSNSW) is to celebrate the fifth annual National Corrections Day on Friday (21 January), recognising the efforts of the State’s 10,000 corrections staff.
Commissioner for CSNSW, Kevin Corcoran said this year’s theme Giving back, highlighted the ways CSNSW staff went beyond the call of duty to protect the community, fundraise for charities, volunteer and contribute to community projects and partnerships.
Mr Corcoran praised staff for their dedication and ongoing commitment during another especially challenging year.
“Our staff are highly skilled, well-trained professionals who turn up at work every day to make a positive change in people’s lives,” he said.
“They have continued to adapt to the ever-evolving pandemic and its impact on the way the Corrective Services NSW operates.”
“Not only do our staff work tirelessly in their day-to-day jobs, but many give their time to volunteer organisations such as the State Emergency Services and Rural Fire Service.”
Mr Corcoran said CSNSW staff were committed to making a positive difference to the community, so it was fitting to share their stories and pay tribute to them on National Corrections Day.
Minister for Corrections, Geoff Lee said corrections officers needed more public recognition for the challenging and sometimes dangerous work they did behind the scenes.
“The public doesn’t often realise what a significant role corrections staff play in helping people break the cycle of reoffending, so National Corrections Day is an opportunity to recognise the valuable contribution they make to keep our community safe,” Mr Lee said.
“Corrective Services NSW staff work tirelessly to ensure offenders have access to employment, training, programs, education and other interventions to help reduce their risk of reoffending,” he said.
