Corrective Services has launched a recruiting drive for prison officers.

Superintendent Gemma Barry of West Kimberley Regional Prison (WKRP) said the search was on for motivated men and women who could act as mentors and positive role models.

“I am hoping to attract people with knowledge of the Kimberley area to join WKRP,” Superintendent Barry said, “it’s a unique open campus style facility, based on a self-care operating philosophy.”

He said Eastern Goldfields Regional Prison (EGRP), located in Kalgoorlie, was also hiring.

Superintendent John Hedges said the EGRP was encouraging women and Aboriginal people in particular to apply for the positions.

“Prison officers help to provide structure in the lives of the prisoners they work with every day and receive comprehensive, nationally recognised training in the skills needed to work in custodial facilities,” Superintendent Hedges said.

“The Department embraces a diverse workforce which is the key in providing the best possible outcomes in regional prison settings.”

Senior Prison Officer at WKRP, ‘Jason’ said he had been at West Kimberley for a little over a year, although he had worked for Corrective Services for more than 17 years.

“Before I applied I’d never considered becoming a prison officer, I just applied because it’s a secure role, but I love it, have done since day one,” Jason said.

For anyone interested in applying for the positions there will be information sessions held in Derby and Kalgoorlie in the coming weeks.

Details of the positions can be accessed at this PS News link.
