Victoria’s Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed the first two Victorian cases of the 2019 novel coronavirus and provided return-to-school guidelines.

Acting Chief Health Officer, Angie Bone said a visitor from Wuhan, China, was confirmed positive for the virus last week following a series of tests.

“He has spent his time since arrival with relatives at their home,” Dr Bone said.

“Close contacts are being provided support and education and monitored closely for signs or symptoms of illness,” she said.

Dr Bone said the second case of the virus was confirmed in a Victorian resident recently returned from Wuhan.

She said the man attended a restaurant called The House of Delight on Montclair Avenue, Glen Waverley, between 5.30pm and 7pm on Sunday 26 January.

“Diners will be contacted if booking details were left with the restaurant,” she said.

“We are urging anyone who was at this restaurant during this time to be aware of symptoms, and to contact the Department on 1300 651 160 in order to be provided with advice.”

Dr Bone said that any Victorians returning from China with symptoms of fever and breathing difficulty or cough should seek medical help immediately.

“Before attending a GP or emergency department they should call ahead and mention their recent travel and symptoms,” she said.

Victoria’s Chief Health Officer, Brett Sutton announced that children and staff who had recently travelled to Wuhan could attend school but should be closely monitored for symptoms of coronavirus.

“Schools should remain vigilant, but exclusion is only required for anyone who is unwell, is confirmed to have novel coronavirus, or who has been in close contact with a confirmed case,” he said.

“Any child or staff member who has been in close contact with a confirmed case should not attend school or childcare for 14 days after their last contact,” Dr Sutton said.
