Consumer laws open early shopping

Vulnerable Western Australians are to receive early daily access to Coles and Woolworth supermarkets thanks to extended trading permits granted by the Commissioner for Consumer Protection.

Under the permits, the two giant organisations will be permitted to open from 7am to 8am from Monday to Saturday and from 10am to 11am on Sunday for one month to counter COVID-19 shopping congestion.

The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety said other retailers who lodged for extending trading hours to help support the elderly and disabled during the pandemic would also be considered.

Premier, Mark McGowan said these types of measures were included in the pandemic plan to ensure everyone had the opportunity to shop.

“We support the initiative from the major companies to support the elderly and people with disability – it makes sense,” Mr McGowan said.

“I urge all Western Australians to be mindful of those most vulnerable in our community,” he said.

“I understand everyone’s concerns about COVID-19, but please be respectful.”

He said panic buying had stripped supermarket shelves bare of various items.

“I stress that this is not a necessary response to the situation we are dealing with,” the Premier said.

Minister for Commerce, John Quigley said these were challenging times, particularly for the most vulnerable citizens.

“Measures such as this will hopefully give our pensioners and people with disabilities peace of mind, knowing they can do their shopping and purchase essential items in a less stressful environment,” Mr Quigley said.
