Nine projects to improve Canberra’s community gardens have been awarded funding in the Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate’s latest community garden grants program.
Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability, Shane Rattenbury said community gardens played an increasingly important role in bringing people together and enabling them to grow their own healthy food.
“The gardens also improve our resilience to climate change,” Mr Rattenbury said.
He said it was the fourth round of grants with funding available to community organisations and owners’ corporations.
“I’m pleased to see the diversity of successful grant recipients which includes the establishment of three community gardens within owners’ corporations of multi-unit developments,” Mr Rattenbury said.
The nine successful communities to benefit from the grants include Wybelena Grove, Cook; Canberra Organics Growers Society, Yarralumla; Hudson Square Apartments, Harrison; COGS Community Garden, Mitchell; Lyneham Commons Food Forest, Lyneham; Canberra City Farm, Fyshwick; Evoque Apartments, Braddon; Nutrition Australia, Chifley, and ELAN Apartments in Lyneham.
“The Community Gardens Grants program has been a great success, helping support community gardens over the several years with 21 projects funded,” Mr Rattenbury said.
“I look forward to seeing these nine new projects take shape over the coming months and encourage interested Canberrans to consider joining their local community garden.”
