Committee takes aim at new Coat of Arms

The Legislative Assembly is considering the idea of adopting an ACT Coat of Arms.

According to the Chair of the Assembly’s Standing Committee on Environment and Transport and City Services, Suzanne Orr MLA, the ACT is the only Australian State or Territory without a coat of arms.

“The familiar coat of arms with a black swan and a white swan (pictured) actually represents the City of Canberra,” Ms Orr said.

She said the Committee had been asked on 29 November last year by the Assembly to inquire into a separate Territory Coat of Arms.

“The Committee has now familiarised itself with the conventions surrounding the design of coats of arms and invites written submissions until 21 April.”

She said the Committee was particularly interested in hearing a range of views on two questions: Whether there should be a Coat of Arms for the Australian Capital Territory (in addition to the Canberra City Coat of Arms), and if so, what symbols might be included in the design.

“When suggesting images and symbols, the Committee invites people to describe how they are significant to or representative of the people, history or landscape of the ACT,” Ms Orr said.

“In May the Committee intends to invite further community input to the inquiry through an online survey.”

She said the Committee wanted to gather a wide range of views, and would like this information to reach as many people as possible.

Information on how to make a submission to the Committee can be found at this PS News link.
