The Department for Environment and Water (DEW) has invited members of the community to share their feedback on the Coorong Restoration Roadmap which is to guide how the strategic restoration of the Coorong might be implemented.
The DEW said that restoring Coorong to a healthy state was critical for the environment, First Nations, local communities, the tourism industry, the overall health of the Murray-Darling Basin and the success of the Murray-Darling Basin Plan.
“The Coorong is a wetland of international importance and one of the most significant waterbird habitats in the Murray-Darling system,” the Department said.
“Despite its significance however, the Coorong has suffered a long-term decline which was exacerbated by the Millennium Drought,” it said.
“To aid the Coorong’s return to a desired healthy state, the Healthy Coorong, Healthy Basin (HCHB) program was developed to improve the ecology, knowledge and management of the Coorong and get the region back on track for a healthy future.”
According to DEW, since 2018 the HCHB program has identified knowledge gaps and has informed the development of targeted and effective management actions for the Coorong.
DEW said the Coorong Restoration Roadmap presented how it would use our key findings and partner with scientists, communities and First Nations to implement a strategic restoration program for the Coorong.
It said it was seeking public feedback through an online survey on the draft to ensure it reflected community and stakeholder views.
The survey will take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete and consultations will close on Monday 19 June.
