The Domestic Animal Services (DAS) facility in Symonston is currently closed due to the presence of a nasty virus affecting dogs.

The facility has been closed since last week due after coronavirus was found with DAS saying the closure was expected to last for several days.

It said two affected dogs had been quarantined and were currently being treated.

The virus cannot be transmitted to humans.

“Staff are following stringent operating procedures,” DAS said.

“This includes a full scrub down of the facility, keeping all dogs separated, the removal of non-essential items from the kennels and repeat disinfection.”

It said its rangers, where possible, tried to reunite lost or roaming dogs with their owners without having to take them to the DAS facility.

“Every day, DAS returns lost dogs to their owners, feeds, houses and walks the dogs before their families come to get them and re-homes the dogs whose owners never come,” it said.

“Any dogs that do stay at DAS will need to be home impounded for up to 10 days on their release.”

It said the risk of the virus was always present in the ACT and if someone suspects their dog may have contracted it they should call or attend their local vet.
