Clean team to clean up city

A new team to make the inner-city Canberra cleaner, greener and generally more attractive has been appointed by the City Renewal Authority (CRA).

The dedicated cleaning, maintenance and place improvement team is to be headed by Lavanna Neal (pictured) with the aim of lifting the standard of cleaning, greenery, maintenance and presentation of the city centre, making it a more enjoyable destination for visitors, residents and workers.

Ms Neal said the team would also work to introduce more seating, planting and entertainment programs over time, making public places more inviting.

“Whether you’re a business or property owner, a community member or part of Government I will be your first point of contact to facilitate repairs and increase cleaning and maintenance within Civic, Acton and Braddon,” Ms Neal said.

“In addition, I will curate a program of arts, entertainment and activities, including four larger seasonal events during spring, Christmas, autumn and winter.”

She said working as a place manager was not a “neat” day with predetermined task lists.

“A lot of my days will include walking and chatting to business owners and their staff, as well as people using the spaces in the city,” Ms Neal said.

“I’ll be managing our place team and event co-ordinators, curating a program of events that bring life and soul to our city, as well as listening to others’ ideas about how we can transform a rather grey and sometimes uninviting space into a place that people treasure.”

The extra services are being funded by the City Centre Marketing and Improvements Levy, which is paid by commercial land owners in Civic and Braddon.
