A 30-unit property in Clayfield has been purchased by the Department of Communities, Housing and the Digital Economy with the aim of housing people in need.
In a statement the Department said the Clayfield property was vacant and had been placed on the open market for sale.
“The village was previously used to assist aged residents and following refurbishment, will become additional social housing, providing safe, secure and affordable places for older adults,” the Department said.
Minister for Communities and Housing, Leeanne Enoch said the character-filled property was close to public transport and shops and offered ample communal space, an outdoor barbecue area and onsite parking.
“Further scoping work will be done to determine the final layout, while maintaining the property’s heritage and character,” Ms Enoch said.
“We will support the tenants as they transition to their new homes and will consider on-site support as part of our service-delivery model.”
She said the holistic approach meant the Department was not just providing housing assistance, but also connecting people to support from a range of Government and non-Government Agencies that were specific to their individual needs.
“A focus from the recent Housing Summit was the use of innovative property purchases to increase housing supply. We’re looking at all workable options,” Ms Enoch said.
