The ACT Heritage Council has added Canberra’s ‘Civic Square precinct’ in the city to its Heritage Register on a provisional basis.

Deputy Chair of the Council, Ken Heffernan said the Council would welcome community comments on the move.

“The Civic Square Precinct is a place for the people of Canberra,” Dr Heffernan said.

“It is significant to the ACT for its social and cultural values, because it is an important open space for public use,” he said.

“The precinct has seen celebrations and events and is known for expressions of democratic freedoms through protest.”

Dr Heffernan said the precinct had been the place of local administration since the 1960’s and boasted a modernist design.

“Canberrans can express their views and aspirations to the Territory government here,” he said.

“It is a place where we can celebrate our victories and recognise important people and cultural moments.”

He said there were more than 50 years of events and memories of Civic Square that made it important to the people of Canberra.

He encouraged people to let the Council know how they felt about Civic Square and to share their memories of the place.

Public comments will be accepted until 21 October with details of the Council’s assessment accessible at this PS News link.
