The State Library has branched out from its usual role to open a rooftop bar in the heart of Sydney’s CBD, offering views of the Harbour and Sydney skyline.

State Librarian, John Vallance said the opening of Library Bar, located on top of the Mitchell Building, was part of a grand plan to turn the much-loved Library “inside out” and create new spaces for Sydneysiders and visitors to use and enjoy.

“The Library’s major transformational project will also see improved access to all its buildings, as well as a new underground auditorium, photography gallery and expanded bookshop and café, all due to open next year,” Dr Vallance said.

“Entry to the Library Bar will be through giant 1930s timber arch doors where visitors are then ushered through hidden areas of the Library before being delivered into the venue by lift four floors up,” he said.

Dr Vallance said the venue was divided into three distinct areas, with people able to head to the observation deck for views of the Harbour and across the Domain; enjoy open-air sunset cocktails in the spacious courtyard; or find a cosy spot indoors at the front of the bar.

The State Librarian said the front of the bar featured a mix of plush, low, cocktail chairs, banquette seating and small bar tables arranged around a baby grand piano, which was played occasionally.

He said the bar menu aimed to highlight NSW producers and distillers as much as possible through cocktails made from locally produced spirits to a Library Bar signature Pale Ale from Staves Brewery in Glebe, Sydney.

Dr Vallance said the Library Bar was a small bar licensed to serve 120 people and open for cocktails, wine, craft beer and grazing from 4pm to 10pm, Wednesday to Saturday.

Commenting on the opening, Premier, Dominic Perrottet said the spectacular view from the rooftop of the State Library had been hidden away for far too long and it was fitting that the iconic location was celebrated.
