The Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate (EPSDD) has restocked the ACT’s lakes in time for Christmas, releasing 39,000 native Murray cod into recreational fishing lakes.

Senior Ecologist with the Directorate, Lisa Evans said the pre-Christmas release would ensure healthy fish populations in the Territory’s lakes.

“Today’s release of fish is great news for local anglers, with more opportunities to enjoy our ACT Waterways,” Dr Evans said.

“The stocking of recreational fish species in Canberra’s urban lakes helps in the conservation of native species by relieving fishing pressure on the more fragile rivers and streams in the ACT.”

She said the annual fish stocking program was carried out by EPSDD in partnership with the National Capital Authority.

She said the cod were released into Yerrabi Pond, Gungahlin Pond, Isabella Pond and Upper Stranger Pond, with a further 21,000 to be released into Lake Burley Griffin.

Dr Evans said the release was part of the ACT Fish Stocking Plan.

She said more than a million fingerlings had been stocked into local lakes and ponds since 2000 under the Plan.
