National Children’s Commissioner, Megan Mitchell has called on Australia’s children to get involved in a new national survey so their voices can be heard.
Developed by the University of Melbourne and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) Behind the News program with the assistance of the Australian Human Rights Commission, the 2018 Children’s Rights Poll is now open for contributions.
Commissioner Mitchell said the results would be used to help the Commission include the voices of Australian children and young people in an upcoming report to the United Nations.
“The results of the 2018 Children’s Rights Poll will provide an invaluable insight into what Australia must do to ensure the rights of all children are being upheld,” Commissioner Mitchell said.
“I know many children and young people are really engaged with civil society and want desperately to play a bigger role in our community.”
She said she hoped all parents and guardians encourage their children to complete the Poll and be heard.
Commissioner Mitchell said the Poll asks all children and young people — aged 17 and under — how they feel about growing up in Australia, what rights are important to them, and how easy it is for them to access necessities such as medicine and schooling.
The survey closes on 10 August and takes around eight minutes to complete.
The results will be released at the University of Melbourne’s National Child and Youth Forum to be chaired by Commissioner Mitchell in Melbourne on 7 September.
The Poll can be accessed on the ABC’s website at this PS News link.
