The Office of the Guardian for Children and Young People has announced that its share of its updated Charter of Rights for Children and Young People in Care Flashcards are now available to order.
Describing the flashcards as ‘fun and interactive’, the Guardian for Children and Young People, Shona Reid said they were an excellent tool for children and young people who had a disability or other support needs to learn about their rights.
“Having these resources is an excellent way for children and young people of all ages and abilities to explore their rights,” Ms Reid said.
“It is vital for children, regardless of their needs and abilities, to know about their rights and be made aware of how they should be treated and what to expect while in care,” she said.
“By knowing their rights will help give them the confidence to stand up and advocate for themselves.”
She said some children and young people needed more support in understanding their circumstances and the flashcards provided a great starting point to begin those conversations.
She said the cards could be used by parents, carers and educators to explore the Charter conversationally, enabling children and young people to be actively involved in their learning.
“The flashcards are available in two sets; in Set A, the images and activities are tailored towards younger children, while Set B depicts pictures and activities tailored towards young people with greater independence and additional cards about the ninth right in the Charter (support for leaving care),” Ms Reid said.
She said each card also included helpful hints for starting the conversation and adapting the learning to meet the needs of each child or young person.
