Transport Canberra is encouraging school kids to walk safely to school this Friday (20 May) as part of the 23rd annual National Walk Safely to School Day.

Encouraging children to try walking, riding, or scooting to school, Transport Canberra said the Day was a special reminder for parents and kids to stay safe around schools.

“Walk Safely to School Day is a great opportunity for parents and carers to promote safe pedestrian behaviour,” Transport Canberra said.

“Walking, riding, or scooting to school is a great way for kids to incorporate physical activity into their day, teach independence all while reducing the environmental impact caused by car travel,” it said.

“If home is a little too far from school to walk all the way, why not consider a part way point this Walk Safely to School Day.”

Transport Canberra said part way points were drop off areas within a short walking distance to schools where students could walk from if walking all the way from home wasn’t practical.

The Directorate said walking part of the way to and from school was one way to increase safety around schools by helping to alleviate traffic and drop off/pick up point congestion.

“Parents can do your bit in keeping children safe by following the road rules around schools,” it said.

Transport Canberra reminded parents and carers to obey the speed limit, model safe behaviour by using zebra crossings, and park safely and legally.

“We have lots of helpful tips for traveling safely to school so you’ll be ready to hit the pavement in no time.”
