Canberra’s pet owners are being reminded to register their feline friends before the free registration period comes to a close.
Issuing the reminder, City Services said all cats and dogs over eight weeks of age must now be registered, and their details updated annually to help the Directorate reunite lost pets with their owners.
It said cats born before 1 July 2022 could be registered for free until 1 July this year.
“Annual registration ensures we have up to date contact details for pet owners so we can reunite cats with their families quickly if they are lost or somewhere they shouldn’t be,” City Services said.
“Keeping dog registration details up to date means Domestic Animal Services can return lost dogs to their owners as quickly as possible and follow-up on reports of dangerous dogs or dog attacks,” it said.
“It also provides better information about where dogs live so that education activities can be better targeted.”
City Services said cats born before 1 July 2022 did not have to be contained unless they lived in one of the 17 currently declared cat containment suburbs.
It said containment meant owners keep their cat on their premises 24 hours a day.
“This can include your house or apartment, an enclosed area in a backyard or courtyard, or a cat crate,” the Directorate said.
“There are lots of innovative cat containment solutions which still give pet cats an opportunity to experience the outdoors, like backyard cat runs and balcony netting that keeps cats and wildlife separate.”
