Transport for NSW has released an updated used car safety ratings guide to help buyers make the safest possible choice when purchasing a used car.

Deputy Secretary for Safety, Environment and Regulation at Transport for NSW, Tara McCarthy said the guide, 2020-2021 Used Car Safety Ratings Buyers Guide, provided a comprehensive safety picture of 261 second-hand vehicle makes and models.

“Your car choice might save your life if you’re involved in a crash,” Ms McCarthy said.

“With the COVID-19 pandemic this year many more people are choosing to drive and used car sales have increased,” she said.

“I’m urging all drivers to choose the safest vehicle possible to protect themselves, their passengers and other road users in a crash.”

Ms McCarthy said there were many five-star rated vehicles across a variety of categories as well as ‘safer picks’ that gave excellent protection to the driver, caused less serious injury to other road users and included crash avoidance technology.

“Some of the safer pick vehicles are almost 15 years old, showing that safety technology is now an option available even in older vehicles,” she said.

Executive Director of the Centre for Road Safety, Bernard Carlon said the Guide was developed by the Monash University Accident Research Centre on behalf of the NSW Centre for Road Safety and other members of the Vehicle Safety Research Group.
