Cape York man arrested in Colombia for alleged cocaine possession

A south-eastern Cape York man has been arrested in South America on charges of possessing a trafficable quantity of cocaine.

The man, who is in his 50s but whom the Cape York Weekly has chosen not to name for legal reasons, has been arrested in Colombia for allegedly carrying 3.5 kilograms of cocaine as he attempted to leave the country.

It is understood from numerous sources the man has made multiple trips between Columbia and Dubai over the past eight months.

The man is a well-known Cape York resident who is employed by a council contractor.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed an Australian resident in Colombia was receiving consular assistance.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing consular assistance to an Australian detained in Colombia,” a spokesperson said.

“Owing to our privacy obligations, we are unable to provide further comment. ”

Minister for Foreign Affairs Penny Wong did not respond to requests for comment from Cape York Weekly.
